Over the last year, schools across the country have had a critical issue finding qualified teachers, and what’s worse, some of the high quality and engaging teachers within the profession have left their positions due to a variety of issues, which include burnout. Besides hiring emergency certified teachers who are sometimes heavy on emergency and light on certified, what can school communities do to retain and recruit the best teachers?

Ava Tasker-Mitchell has held various roles in education over the past 24 years, including teacher, team leader, assistant principal, principal, and executive director of teaching and learning. She has served as an instructional director for a region of schools in two Maryland districts. A veteran conference presenter and author, Tasker-Mitchell is a recent graduate of Howard University’s Urban Superintendent’s Academy.
Stacy Ruben-Storey
Principal, Spencer Elementary, Oklahoma City Public Schools
Stacy Ruben-Storey has been an educator for 14 years. A former teacher and an assistant principal, she is currently the principal of Spencer Elementary. Her goal is to meet the needs of her students so they can focus on their learning.
